LEICESTER – Selectmen approved the existing and soon-to-be leaving town administrator to negotiate a deal with a former local town administrator to become his interim replacement. In a 4-0-1 vote, selectmen Monday night instructed Town Administrator Kevin J. Mizikar to work out a "tentative agreement" with James P. Purcell to serve as the interim town administrator as they search for Mr. Mizikar's replacement.

Old Rochester senior Alex Bilodeau serves up a winner in his match at second singles against Dover-Sherborn's Lucas Minas during the MIAA Div. 3 South team finals held on June 10 at Medway High School.

The formal opening for the Gifts from the Garden show takes place on Thursday, July 27, during the Arts on the Green event being held from 5:30-8pm .

The Massachusetts Senate on Friday to approve a final $40.202B billion budget for Fiscal Year 2018. The budget makes reductions in spending from the originally proposed Senate budget due to revised revenue forecasts, but maintains a strong commitment to Chapter 70 education funding and preserving local aid to cities and towns.

Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the killing of 81-year-old Laura Shifrina, who was found dead in her Needham apartment on May 31, prosecutors said Thursday. In a brief statement, Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey's office said "there will be an arraignment at or shortly after 9 a.m. [Friday] in the murder" of Shifrina.

The jury in the Michael P. McCarthy case apparently accepted at least some of the testimony of Rachelle Bond about the murder of her daughter, Bella, according to veteran defense lawyers. "Given the fact that there's truly only one significant witness in the matter, you'd have to conclude that despite her flaws, the jury accepted the essential components of her testimony," said Timothy Burke, a Needham lawyer who is a former Suffolk prosecutor.
